Happy Helpers for the Homeless was founded in February 1993 by Executive Director Amber Coffman, Miss Maryland Teen USA 1998. Their mission is to provide food, toiletries and clothing with compassion and a smile; and to spread the belief that if all those able, got involved, the human tragedy of homelessness would be solved.

Each year, the Miss Maryland USA pageant hosts a Humanitarian Service Project and asks each of our contestants to bring in gently used winter coats to donate to Happy Helpers. We are thrilled that our contestants respond in large numbers each and every year and it has become the largest coat drive in the state of Maryland. In 2012, we once again collected over 1,300 coats to help keep the homeless men, women & children of Maryland a little bit warmer during the cold winter months..

Please give a bit of your heart to the homeless. We really hope that you will get involved with Happy Helpers for the Homeless. You are certainly needed! There is no limit to what you can accomplish on behalf of those you serve.  The compassionate service of Happy Helpers will continue until the need no longer exists.

Since 1998, when the Miss Universe Organization made the decision to support breast and ovarian cancer survivors, each Miss USA has spent thousands of hours educating the public about breast and ovarian cancer. Due to her participation in events like breast cancer walks, seminars and telethons, our titleholders have helped raise millions of dollars for research.

Miss USA will spend countless hours working with groups like Susan G. Koman for the Cure, Gilda's Club and the USO.

Gilda's Club

It is the vision of Gilda's Club Worldwide to become the international leader for strengthening the global awareness of this philosophy, and to advance an understanding of the essential bond that emotional and social support brings to the cancer experience, not only for those living with cancer, but also for the families and friends who surround them.

USO

The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The original intent of Congress - and enduring style of USO delivery - is to represent the American people by extending a touch of home to the military. The USO currently operates more than 135 centers worldwide, including ten mobile canteens located in the continental United States and overseas.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. They work together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, they have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Miss Teen USA spends her year building relationships with organizations devoted to education and action, such as Best Buddies, D.A.R.E., Girl Talk, Sparrow Club and Project Sunshine.

Best Buddies

Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment.

D.A.R.E.

D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.

Girl Talk

Founded in 2002, Girl Talk is a student-to-student mentoring program that pairs middle school girls with high school girls who serve as mentors. Weekly meetings are held before or after school, during which the high school leader conducts valuable lessons that address issues middle school girls face every day.

Sparrow Clubs

Sparrow Clubs USA is a national non-profit organization of school-based clubs that assist children in medical crisis. Through community service and fundraising projects, Sparrow Clubs support children who have either life threatening illnesses or chronic disabilities and whose families face financial hardship because of it.

Project Sunshine

Project Sunshine is a nonprofit organization that provides free educational, recreational, and social programs to children facing medical challenges and their families. Project Sunshine sends volunteers to visit hospitalized children to provide arts and crafts, tutoring, reading, nutritional cooking and special events. With 10,000 volunteers in 75 cities across the United States, Canada, China, Israel, Kenya, and Puerto Rico, Project Sunshine serves 60,000 children each year in 150 medical facilities.
